Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was born on March 1, 1944, in Kolkata, India. He was a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 2000 to 2011. He was also a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Bhattacharjee’s family background was steeped in politics. His father, Bhupendranath Bhattacharjee, was a freedom fighter and a member of the Indian National Congress. His cousin, Sukanta Bhattacharya, was a famous revolutionary poet.
Bhattacharjee studied Bengali literature at Presidency College in Kolkata. After graduating, he worked as a teacher for a few years before joining the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1966.
Bhattacharjee was elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1977 and served as a minister in the Jyoti Basu government from 1987 to 1996. In 1999, he was appointed Deputy Chief Minister of West Bengal.
Bhattacharjee became Chief Minister of West Bengal in 2000. He served in this position for 11 years, during which time he oversaw a period of economic growth and development in the state. He also introduced a number of social reforms, such as the Right to Information Act and the West Bengal Urban Employment Guarantee Act.
Bhattacharjee retired from politics in 2011. He is married to Meera Bhattacharjee and they have one daughter, Suchetana.
At present he is ill and is in the hospital now responding to a somewhat normal physical condition.
